As an Athletic Training major at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, you'll be on the path to success as you invest your time and energy in an outstanding college education. Along with classes in Health and Physical Education, you'll take a comprehensive series of courses for your Athletic Training major, such as Biomechanics, Adapted Physical Activity and Sport, Physiological Basis of Strength Training, Therapeutic Modalities, and Medical Physics. At IUP, you'll also receive hands-on training through a series of eight laboratory courses and a minimum of four semesters of supervised field experiences. Many scholar-athletes at IUP combine their studies with tan interest in sports. A Division II school, IUP is a respected competitor in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in eight varsity sports for men and eleven for women. IUP also offers a variety of club and intramural sports. Athletic training is a profession recognized by the American Medical Association. Admission to the IUP program is competitive. What You'll Become The Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training prepares you for a career in sports, hospital, or fitness settings. Graduates of this IUP program have the necessary education and clinical skills to apply for the Board of Certification examination for athletic training. This degree does not lead to teacher certification for schools. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of athletic trainers is projected to grow at a much faster-than-average rate of 24 percent from 2006 to 2016. While the majority of jobs are still related to sports, the study noted that about a third of athletic trainers worked in health care. Another 34 percent of trainers worked in educational settings, mainly colleges, universities, and high schools, according to the report, and about 20 percent worked in fitness and sports centers.
