Purpose The purpose of the Doctor of Theology in Pastoral Counseling degree is to prepare persons for the specialized ministry of pastoral counseling at a doctoral level of competence. The supervision in pastoral counseling , which is an integral part of the degree program, is provided according to the standards of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC) and the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT). It may, therefore, be used to meet the supervisory hours required for AAPC and AAMFT membership. Studies included within the program will assist the student: To gain an advanced understanding of appropriate theological and theoretical concepts; To learn under qualified supervision the application of these concepts in pastoral counseling and to promote professional integration of theory and skills in both pastoral counseling and pastoral guidance; and To design and execute a research project appropriate to professional practice, which will give evidence of the aspect of pastoral counseling.
