Why should I major in the Emergency Medical Services Program? The Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) serve as an extension of a physician and bring basic life support to the patient. Emergency Medical Technicians are employed by fire departments, ground ambulances, hospitals, and private industries. They care for patients of traumatic and medical emergencies, as well as non-emergency situations. As the average age of people in America continues to rise, the need for Emergency Medical Technicians will also rise. Emergency Medical Technicians can process emergency field deliveries, apply dressings, assist with patient medications, and apply splints and bandages. They may also perform automated defibrillation. This is the minimum level required to transport patients in ambulances. The educational program at Iowa Western will focus in four areas: classroom, lab/practical, clinical internship and field internship. Upon completing the EMT-Basic course, the student will be eligible to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) , EMT-Basic exam and be certified by the State of Iowa Department of Public Health-Bureau of EMS.
