Graduates of this program are prepared for entry level positions as professional court/conference reporters with a comprehensive knowledge of office procedures, medical and legal terminology, court systems, medical and legal record keeping, and document preparation. They will learn keyboarding, machine transcription, skills for effective client/coworker relationships and be provided with the opportunity to certify their shorthand, dictation, typing and 10-key speeds, editing skills and office software application abilities. Court Reporting program graduates may find entry-level employment as professional court reporters, conference reporters and closed caption transcribers in both the public and private sectors of the economy. Program Objective: To develop court reporting students' machine writing skills to the level required for proficiency, admitting them to the Texas State Certification Test, specifically Question and Answer materials at 225 words per minute. Jury Charge material at 200 words per minute, and Literary Material at 180 words per minute. To provide adequate knowledge of English grammar, spelling vocabulary, advanced punctuation, law legal terminology, and current events. To expose students to technical dictation and multi-voice dictation as well as giving them hands-on computer training, building their keyboarding/typing skills to a minimum of 60 words per minute and providing an opportunity for students to intern with practicing reporters.
