Program Objectives and Mission The Department of Psychology offers a Ph.D. degree in Clinical Psychology. The mission of the doctoral program is: 1. To produce highly skilled, license eligible graduates who can function as both scientists and clinicians. 2. To increase the awareness, knowledge, and skills of students, faculty, and professionals in the area of multicultural psychology . 3. To support the progress of graduate students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds as well as immersing traditional graduate students in multicultural experiences within the community. 4. To provide field experiences designed to meet the diverse psychological, health, and service needs of ethnic minority populations. Individuals aspiring to obtain a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology should be aware that the faculty, supervisors, and administrators have a professional, ethical, and potentially legal obligation to ensure that the students who complete this program are competent to manage future relationships (e.g., client, collegial, consulting, professional, public, scholarly, supervisory, teaching) in an ethical, effective, and appropriate manner. Because of this commitment, and with the parameters of the administrative authority, the Program Faculty, training staff, supervisors, and administrators strive only to admit, advance, graduate, or recommend student-trainees with demonstrable problems (e.g., cognitive, emotional, psychological, interpersonal, technical, and ethical) that may interfere with professional competence to other programs, the profession, employers, or the public-at-large. Participants in this program will be guided by a curriculum anchored in the cumulative body of psychological knowledge with a firm basis in statistics, research design, and experimental methodology. The program develops in the student, the knowledge and skills required for effective functioning as an empirically-oriented clinical psychologist in diverse settings. This is accomplished through a sequence of formal clinical courses, distinguished by in-depth exploration of multicultural issues and exposure to ethnic minority communities, including interdisciplinary and inter-organizational collaboration and consultation. The process through which this mission will be accomplished is consistent with the goals and mission of Jackson State University as a comprehensive university. An essential part of the program are students and faculty who are committed to multicultural issues and who are comfortable with objective assessment and systematic intervention on both an individual and community level.
