Mission The Department of Music seeks to provide professional training and promote scholarship among students in the discipline of music. It recognizes the interdependence among performance studies, music education and the theoretical and historical aspects of music study and seeks to develop student excellence in each area. Through the presentation of a variety of ensembles, solo performances and curricular offerings, the Department serves the musical needs of the University, the General College student, campus cultural goals, musical needs of the region and fosters exemplary preparation and training of music educators. The Department seeks to develop musicians who are aware of the past, actively engaged in the present and dynamically anticipating the future. The Department prepares musicians capable of leading and making musical contributions in what ever community or walk of life they choose. The Department of Music offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with two concentrations. Concentration One in Music Education fulfills the requirements for the professional certificate to teach music in Alabama public schools on both the elementary and secondary levels. Concentration Two in General Music offers a program designed for the study of music within a liberal arts curriculum and requires a non-music minor.
