EMT- Basic from John C Calhoun State Community College is a Campus Certificate Medical Emergency degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program, approved by the Alabama Department of Public Health, utilizes nationally-recognized standards to provide students not only knowledge about the critical differences between the physiology, the pathophysiology, and the clinical symptoms of infants, children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly as they relate to pre-hospital emergency patient care situations, but also skills in the emergency medical care of these patients. EMS education includes legal/ethical considerations and treatment modalities/protocols within the scope of practice of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Students enrolled in the Emergency Medical Services Program may choose to earn a certificate or to earn the Associate in Applied Science degree in Emergency Medical Services. The first certificate of completion is the EMT Level (EMT) and the second is Paramedic. Upon successful completion of each certificate , the student is eligible to apply to take the National Registry Examination at his/her respective level of training. Upon successful completion of the examination, the student will be eligible to apply for licensure to practice in the State of Alabama as an EMT or Paramedic. As vital members of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team, EMTs provide prehospital emergency care to the ill and injured patient, continuing that care until the patient is under the care of a higher level of care. Basic EMTs have the knowledge and skills to provide basic life support to all patients whether the problem is trauma, cardiac, or medical .
