The communication studies program involves the study and practice of human communication. Coursework examines intrapersonal, interpersonal, group and public communication in various organizations and professions. Students study human communication processes through language, nonverbal, argumentation and persuasive interactions The traditions of humanistic and social scientific communication theory are infused into the program. The Bachelor of Arts degree offers the opportunity to specialize in one of four concentrations that address 21st Century communication needs. A concentration in Applied Communication prepares students for careers as communication specialists in non-profit organizations, small businesses and government offices. Students in this concentration have the opportunity to take not only organizational communication and high-impact public speaking courses in Communication Studies, but also courses in such areas as website development, writing, public relations, photography and videography in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and design courses in the School of Visual Communication Design. This is the only concentration that requires students to take courses across the entire College of Communication and Information. All students in this concentration are required to complete a professional internship. You can complete all the courses necessary for this concentration at Kent State University at Tuscarawas through a combination of in-person and distributed learning course delivery. The degree also includes a concentration in Interpersonal Communication. Many students in this area of specialization find jobs in human resources and recruiting, fundraising, sales, patient advocacy, counseling, and other fields that require strong skills in one-to-one communication . Students in this concentration develop knowledge of small group communication, social and family communication patterns, and the non-verbal messages that people send when they communicate. This concentration prepares students who seek careers with a heavy emphasis on face-to-face interaction. All students in this concentration take a required capstone senior seminar. This concentration requires some study at the Kent Campus. The concentration in Organizational Communication teaches students about human interaction in business, industry, social services and other organizational settings. Students concentrating in this area often find positions as training specialists, event planners or sales managers. They learn about effective business and professional communication , conducting and managing meetings, interviewing, working in teams, employee training and development, and diagnosis of and intervention in organization communication problems. Students with an interest in management often find this concentration useful because of the emphasis on communicating in a corporate setting. All students in this concentration take a required capstone senior seminar. This concentration requires some study at the Kent Campus. The Public Communication concentration is designed for students interested in careers in mass communication, politics, government or law. These students learn about freedom of speech , effective argumentation, persuasion, and technological convergence in media. They also have the opportunity to learn how and why different people use different forms of mass media and how their use of mass media affects their lives. The students examine a broad range of communication in public settings, including communication campaigns, crisis communication , and how public opinion and communication help shape government policy and judicial decisions. All students in this concentration take a required capstone senior seminar. This concentration requires some study at the Kent Campus. Regardless of their concentration, all students in Communication Studies take a 15-credit core that covers a basic introduction to human communication, foundational skills for communication , communication theory, communication research methods and a communication diversity course. All students in the School also take 15 credits required in each of the individual concentrations and 15 additional credits of communication electives. Those in the Applied Communication concentration are required to take a minimum of 6 of those elective credits in either Journalism and Mass Communication or Visual Communication Design, and they can use the communication electives to pursue minors in such areas as advertising, design, electronic media, media literacy, photo-illustration, public relations, visual journalism, or web design and programming.
