The program centers on developing an awareness of the social, physiological and legal aspects of deafness in addition to the sign language interpreter skills. Graduates of the program will be prepared for immediate entry-level employment in schools, vocational centers and human service agencies. All of the courses offered in the curriculum are transfer-level. Kirkwood provides advising to help students choose courses that meet transfer institutions' requirements. Graduates of the program, therefore, have the option of pursuing advanced degrees in education, special education, speech therapy, audiology or counseling with the deaf or hard of hearing.
