Patient access services is described as the department that takes care of the patient's needs from the time the patient and their family enter the hospital/clinic until the patient is placed into a bed. The functions include, but are not limited to, greeting and directing the patient and their family, admitting and registering the patient, verifying and certifying insurance, and finding and placing the patient in an open appropriate bed. This curriculum focuses on building a strong knowledge of medical terminology, medical reimbursement, and medical insurance. It also stresses effective communication and awareness of human behavioral characteristics in the healthcare environment. The Healthcare Access Associate curriculum includes a clinical/apprenticeship component. Qualified students will be placed in a hospital/clinical setting where they will experience first-hand the healthcare access profession. The curriculum also helps students prepare for the National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM) exam for certification as a Certified Healthcare Access Associate.
