Program Format: Campus Program Level: Bachelor

Fashion Communication and Promotion from Lasell College is a Campus Bachelor Journalism degree that prepares you for a Communications career. The Fashion Industry involves developing, promoting and selling a product that (a) has specific aesthetic and functional properties, (b) triggers psychological reactions related to desire and need and (c) is adopted by a group of people for a limited amount of time. The Fashion Industry generated over $16 Billion globally in 2009, and it continues to be a driving economic force. Industry trends reflect a shift to cultivating Fashion Communication and Promotion as a distinct, interdisciplinary component of the global culture of today. Fashion has infiltrated major traditional communication outlets: television shows Project Runway, The Fashion Show, Style by Jury, the Rachel Zoe Project and others; Fashion movies from Unzipped to The Devil Wears Prada to September Issue to Valentino the Last Emperor and, Coco, the Orphan who Transformed Fashion; celebrity magazines that tout a "style issue" and style sections in every major Sunday newspaper. Less traditional channels based on the Internet and mobile viewing also reflect an overall heightened awareness of fashion, and a potential to connect with the consumer. Reflecting this trend, the fashion, academic and journalistic communities were startled in 2006 when Washington Post fashion columnist Robin Givhan received the Pulitzer Prize for criticism "for her witty, closely observed essays that transform fashion criticism into cultural criticism" . In an interview, Givhan described her approach to fashion writing: "If there's one thing that I can do, it would be to convince people that when they get dressed in the morning, they are participating in fashion. That's what it is. Fashion is what you wear and how you want to present yourself to the world". In order to harness the commercial essence of this heightened awareness, students need an interdisciplinary formation in relation to the fashion product, marketing, artistic sensibility, and communication. Students studying Fashion Communication and Promotion will draw upon an indepth understanding of the fashion market where the communication techniques are applied in a context dominated by novelty and change. Establishing and maintaining brand image and customer contact through various media, from traditional to Web 3.0 methods will be studied in the physical and virtual environments. Mass media, writing, public relations, and advertising courses will be combined with fashion history and product analysis, trend forecasting, styling, photography, and promotion in a global context to provide a well-rounded graduate capable of applying creative thinking to a wide range of working environments. Graduate placement will be driven by employers ranging from marketing and public relation businesses to companies developing and promoting branded products, including high-profile individuals desiring to maintain a personal brand and non-apparel companies such as those selling small electronics. Student outcomes from this major will include possessing an in-depth understanding of the business of fashion and of how to integrate advertising and communication, consumer needs and an in-depth understanding of the product to contribute to financial success. For those graduates wishing to continue their education, the 5th year masters at Lasell in either Management or Communication would be an option, as would other masters programs in fashion, apparel studies, and communication.
