Psychologists study human and animal behavior and the social, cognitive, developmental, and biological processes related to that behavior. Lehigh's Psychology Department focuses on human social, cognitive, and developmental processes. Biological processes can be studied in greater depth through the behavioral neuroscience major offered by the Biological Sciences department. The psychology major is customized for each student in consultation with his or her faculty advisor. In the B.A. program, students receive broad exposure to psychology through survey courses and then tailor selections of advanced seminars to their interests. The B.S. program combines grounding in associated sciences with a more in-depth understanding in cognitive, developmental, social, or clinical areas. In addition to the required coursework, most psychology majors participate in individual research under faculty supervision and/or complete fieldwork internships in applied settings. The degree in psychology prepares students for graduate work in clinical psychology, developmental psychology , social-personality psychology, and cognitive psychology . Majors also find employment or pursue graduate work in fields such as counseling, special or general education, personnel administration, design science, human factors research, business management, industrial relations, social work, law, and forensic psychology. Students aiming to enter these fields often choose to minor in a field related to one of these careers. Students interested in basic research or in the health professions are advised to take additional courses in natural sciences and mathematics. Students interested in graduate work in clinical psychology may want to complete the B.S. with a concentration in clinical psychology or may want to combine the B.A. with a minor in clinical psychology . Students interested in school teaching may choose to complete the education minor and apply to Lehigh's five-year B.A. or B.S./M.Ed. combined degree and certification program. Additional course work on topics such as learning disabilities, group processes, and cognitive science are available through the College of Education, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and the Cognitive Science Program.
