Emerging from the umbrella of sports medicine, sport science has grown into a multidisciplinary profession that includes exercise physiologists, cardiopulmonary specialists, athletic trainers, physical therapists, nutritionists, coaches, personal trainers and researchers. As primary care physicians increasingly prescribe exercise as a form of treatment, rehabilitation and even injury and disease prevention, sport scientists have become integral members of the health care team. Because of the multifaceted nature of the field and the public's growing understanding of the role of exercise in maintaining good health and in helping manage chronic conditions, career opportunities are numerous. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports participation in recreational sports is at an all-time high as the population seeks the health benefits of exercise. And, the U.S. Department of Labor says employment for exercise science professionals is expected to increase much faster than the average for all occupations through 2014. Sport science professionals enjoy varied work, from developing testing and training protocols for individuals to leading group classes, serving as resource people in cardiac rehabilitation centers, corporate fitness programs, health clubs and community-based wellness programs, and consulting with recreational teams as sports injury specialists. Individuals with advanced degrees can also pursue research. Studying Sport Health Science at Life University You can determine the direction of your career in sport health science based on the educational concentrations you select and the practical experience you garner during college. At Life University you can select from four areas of concentration: Chiropractic Sport Science, Sports Coaching, Sports Injury Management, and Exercise and Sports Science. Much of your practical experience will revolve around the Life University Sports Science Institute (LUSSI). In this living laboratory, students work directly with athletes, under faculty supervision, providing pre-event conditioning to injury management and rehabilitation. You will explore exercise physiology, biomechanics and sports chiropractic through hands-on care of clients. Your mentors will be professors who have worked in the field with world-class athletes and as clinical exercise physiologists in hospital-based cardiopulmonary rehabilitation programs. Internship opportunities are also available in the many cardiac rehabilitation and adult fitness programs in hospitals, corporate organizations and outpatient settings across the busy metro Atlanta region. You will also have unique opportunities to work in the functional rehabilitation facilities of our state-of-the-art Center for Health and Optimum Performance (C-HOP). Here, you will help community members achieve greater levels of daily function and sport performance. You will also practice being part of an interdisciplinary care team comprised of senior students in chiropractic, nutrition and dietetics and psychology.
