Education Early Childhood from Lock Haven University is a Campus Bachelor Early Childhood Education degree that prepares you for a Education career. The Early Childhood Education degree will prepare you to be certified to teach children from birth to age eight. The new certification laws in Pennsylvania make this degree mandatory if you want to teach Pre-K through fourth grade in a Pennsylvania public school (effective January 2013). Your courses will provide a strong foundation of basic child development theory and an appreciation for both the historic and contemporary status of children. Throughout your four-year program, and beginning in your second or third semester, you will have active, hands-on interaction with young children putting research and theory into practice. In your senior year, you will complete over 80 hours in both pre-primary and primary childhood classrooms. Your assignments will usually be within a 50-60 mile radius of LHU campus. You are also encouraged to student teach abroad at any of our partner universities. Upon graduation and certification, you will be qualified to teach in elementary schools, pre-schools, and Head Start programs as well as to direct a day care center. Our graduates have a high success rate in finding employment in schools throughout Pennsylvania and across the country. The program is accredited by the NAEYC, the National Association for the Education of Young Children, NCATE, National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education , and PDE, the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
