Program Description: The Practical Nursing program is a 45 credit hour program consisting of four semesters of combined academic and clinical education with emphasis placed on bedside nursing. A student may be allowed under certain conditions to complete the program in three semesters. Guidance from the nursing faculty should be obtained for this decision. A practical nurse is a health care worker who works with other professionals to provide holistic care for people in a variety of health care settings. Practical nurses provide basic care to patients/residents in acute and long term care facilities and home settings, maintain accurate records/data, provide health care knowledge to patients and families, and contribute to the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care within the realm of the state Nurse Practice Act. Upon completion of the program, the graduate is eligible to write the NCLEX-PN exam for state licensure and become a licensed practical nurse (LPN). The program is approved by the Board of Nursing of the State of Alabama.
