English Literature & Cultural Studies Bachelor from Lyndon State College details

Program Format: Campus Program Level: Bachelor

English Literature & Cultural Studies from Lyndon State College is a Campus Bachelor Interdisciplinary Studies degree that prepares you for a Science career. Program Goals Each of the department's programs provides a foundation in literature , writing, and cultural studies; consequently, the objectives of the Literature Concentration essentially echo the common program goals as a whole. At advanced levels, the Literature & Cultural Studies Concentration also seeks: to provide students with a balance of breadth of knowledge and depth of understanding in English, American, Classical, and World literatures and cultures to further refine students' analytical skills, particularly in terms of literary and cultural analysis to further refine students' research and writing skills, particularly in terms of interpretive analysis and argument to prepare students for graduate-level work in literary studies The department sees the teaching of literature as something quite different from the simple transmission to our students of a set of facts or information about a body of literature that is somehow seen as a central ingredient of ?Western Culture.? Teaching literature is not about information or mere appreciation, but about method: the method of interpretive analysis seeking a critical understanding of a wide range of significant representations of the nature and meaning of human experience over the course of history. The study of literature is inherently interdisciplinary , applying the methods and insights of (for example) psychology, sociology, philosophy, history, aesthetics, and literary theory. Its subject is not simply the wisdom of a particular set of ?great? authors or the beauty of a particular body of ?great? books; rather, the subject of literature is the variety and complexity of human experience and understanding as it is conceived and represented over time and across cultures. ?Classic? texts are not those that have all the great answers; they are those that ask all the great questions.
