Graduates of MTC's Mechanical Engineering program will be awarded the Associate of Applied Science degree. Program Skills: Participants in MTC's Mechanical Engineering associate degree program complete six quarters of full-time study (the time frame can be extended over a longer period of time for those pursuing part-time studies). Courses offered in this program include mathematics and engineering statistics, technical writing, world class manufacturing concepts and applications, engineering mechanics, machine design, physics, and drafting (CAD). Graduates will be able to: comply with standards to plan, design, and analyze mechanical components and systems processes; use the principle of equilibrium to determine all external forces in static mechanical systems; analyze and solve technical problems (troubleshoot) using creative thinking and problem solving techniques; develop and interpret technical specifications used in creating designs and acceptance tests; perform acceptance test for components and equipment to assure compliance with specifications; write purchase orders; produce and interpret engineering drawings using standard ANSI format; operate various machine tools and testing equipment safely; produce cost estimates of components, equipment, and systems; utilize a CAD station to produce engineering drawings that conform to ANSI format; develop a fluid power circuit using basic components to accomplish specific tasks; apply basic statistical concepts to develop, operate, and monitor a quality assurance program; and establish, operate, and monitor a system to document design revisions for components, equipment, and systems. Job opportunities for mechanical specialties are projected to increase nationally as much as 20 percent for this field through 2010.
