The first of its kind in the St. Louis region, the Maryville Masters of Education in Teacher as Leader program was developed collaboratively by our teacher education and educational leadership faculty based on input and ideas from area teachers, administrators and alumni. It combines the best of research-based approaches to curriculum and instruction with the knowledge and skills teacher-leaders need today. The program instills in you a continued commitment to best classroom practice, but opens you to new roles working with students, fellow teachers and communities. This 30-credit evening/summer program prepares you to be focused on improving student achievement through classroom practices and for your role beyond the classroom as well. Professional/Career Opportunities This major prepares you for many levels of teacher leadership both within and outside classrooms and in school and district offices. For beginning teachers, it provides the groundwork for a successful career, and for experienced teachers, it provides the basis for taking on new leadership roles within classrooms and schools. For most teachers, however, additional coursework and professional development will enhance your practice. Many teachers move into grade level or departmental leadership as a result of their graduate work.
