The Industrial Maintenance Specialization offers training in the industrial maintenance areas of Fluid Power, Programmable Logic Controllers, Mechanical Power Transmission Systems, and Electrical Controls. Students will choose other maintenance topics from a comprehensive technical elective list. Graduates are prepared to install and maintain industrial equipment and systems. The Apprenticeship Studies Specialization prepares students to assume added responsibilities in their chosen skilled trade. Journeymen and women from the skilled trades will further develop their communication and technological skill set through the study of general education and technical topics. Specialization credit will be awarded to graduates of state and federally approved apprenticeship programs. An approved program must meet all Kentucky or Federal guidelines (for programs from other states) for apprenticeship, last at least four years, include at least 144 hours of related classroom instruction per year, and 8000 hours of supervised hands on experience. Apprenticeship Studies credit will be awarded upon completion of the general education and technological core of the Industrial and Engineering technology program and graduation from the apprenticeship program. Program graduates will be prepared to advance into management or more responsible technical positions; some may choose to become self employed in their trade area. The Mechanical specialization, building on a foundation of mathematics, chemistry, physics and graphics, continues on in studies specific to the mechanical and thermal sciences. Graduates are equipped to function in a wide variety of entry level mechanical and manufacturing positions. They may work as assistants to engineers in the design of components and devices for mass production, or they may initiate their careers in laboratories as technicians in the development and testing of mechanical equipment.
