First thing to say is that in United States the teacher certification is granted by the state board of education or by a state advisory committee. Each state has it's own set of rules, requirements and procedures. You also have to take in consideration that a major in education will not always be require to teach. For undergraduate teaching you will usually be required a 4 year college degree with a major in education. Additionally, some states may ask you for a second content major. It is better to check with your college for more details. A second way to become a certified teacher will be a post-college specialization program. This will usually take one year to complete or will be part of a master degree. You can also chose Graduate Training in order to become a certified teacher. Entering a master program in education will be required by some schools. In some situations, when teachers are hard to come by, states will issue emergency credentials to college graduates. In this case you'll have to complete your studies wile working as a teacher. Other thing that needs to be mention is that teaching certification test are administrated by Educational Testing Service (ETS) and the Evaluation Systems group of Pearson Education (formerly National Evaluation Systems, Inc.). Voluntary certification to teachers, school counselors, and school library/media specialists is offered by National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
