This 45-credit program includes coursework in: Family systems theory and practice Contemporary Models of Couple and Family Therapy Clinical assessment and psychotherapy of troubled families Assessment and intervention with the larger systems with which families interact Prevention of emotional problems arising from domestic violence, illness, unemployment, and the court system Requirements are met through Mercy College's affiliated agencies, mental health facilities, hospitals, and private practice settings, which provide supervision by licensed, highly experienced health care professionals. The program takes about two and a half years through part-time attendance of evening classes. During the internship year, students must be available two full days a week, during the day. Courses may be taken as non-matriculation status in order to complete licensure requirements. Graduates of the program are expected to be competent in: Identifying relationship patterns between couples, individuals, children, extended family and employers; assess and treat three-generational patterns and themes; and to assess adaptive coping in preventing the development of serious problems. Providing contemporary and family-oriented psychotherapies to help individuals and families facing mental illnesses, substance abuse, family violence, divorce; and to assist in problem interactions with educational, foster care, adoption and legal agencies. Preventing serious disorders that may stem from homelessness, poverty, unemployment, immigration, or health care issues including managing chronic illnesses and access to medical benefits. Completion of the program will qualify you to take the national exam in Marriage and Family Therapy as the first step towards licensure; provide you with 300 clinical hours towards the 1500 hours required for licensure; prepare you for your provisional license to enable you to work in private practice; inpatient facilities; employee assistance programs; family courts; prisons; health maintenance organizations; community mental health agencies; or hospital settings. Career Opportunities You can find employment as a licensed marriage and family therapist in an agency, hospital, or court system.
