We provide a wide range of academic paths, allowing you to focus on your specific interests. Select one of four areas of concentration: Literature You will gain breadth as you read widely in world, British, and American literatures. You will gain depth as you engage contemporary literary theory and rhetoric. With the intense focus on writing and critical thinking, our students feel well prepared as they enter master and doctoral programs, law school, library science programs, or move directly into the work force as public relations reps, guidance counselors, or administrators at institutions related to the arts. Creative Writing Opportunities abound as you hone your craft in poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction workshops. Join the Creative Writers Club or work as an editor for our own literary magazine, the Literary Review, or Pinyon Poetry, a nationally circulating literary periodical. These internships provide invaluable experience as you prepare for a career in writing. Many of our students enter MFA programs in writing once they complete their degree at Mesa State. Technical Writing Our program helps you write for business, industry, science organizations, and many types of professional writing. We're establishing internships so that you have real-world work experience. Secondary Teaching If you are interested in teaching, you will first gain an expertise in literature and language , then you'll focus on teaching as you design assignments, learn pedagogical theories, work closely with local middle and high school teachers, and complete your student teaching internship. In 2000, the Colorado Department of Education rated our program one of the best in the state for excellent preparation of future teachers.
