Biology from Midland University is a Campus Bachelor Biology degree that prepares you for a Science career. Biology is the study of organisms and how they interact with each other and other components of the universe. The Biology Department strives to instill in the student an understanding of the basic concepts and principles of biology with an emphasis on the individual\\\'s responsibility in maintaining the balance of nature. The understanding of biology is a life-long endeavor and the Biology Department strives to provide the basis for a continuing interest in the living world. The Biology Department is housed in the Swanson Hall of Science, along with other science departments, facilitating the interdisciplinary approach to the study of biology. An attempt is made to provide students instruction with the latest technological equipment. Most courses are designed to emphasize critical thinking skills and independent work. Laboratory experiences accompany most biology courses so that the student gains practical experience. Internships are encouraged during the junior and senior years. A major in biology provides the student with the prerequisite to enter graduate school, various professional programs (medicine, dentistry, etc.), secondary school teaching, business, and a variety of other careers. Midland has enjoyed much success in placing students in graduate, medical, dental and other professional schools. A Midland Biology Major: displays an understanding of the underlying genetic, physiological, morphological, evolutionary and ecological bases for the diversity of organisms in the world; demonstrates an understanding of the interrelation- ship of organisms and especially the impact of the changes elicited by humans in ecological systems and how these perturbations may threaten our survival; demonstrates the ability to suggest solutions to problems through experience in designing and carrying out research, interpreting data, using scientific literature, writing scientific papers and presenting seminars; has the prerequisites necessary to pursue careers in the medical and biological sciences; demonstrates an understanding of the social, moral and ethical implications of new developments in biology.
