The English major is a program which affords the options of earning a liberal arts degree in English or a Bachelor of Science degree in Language Arts Education, with the State of Alabama Class B Secondary Teaching Certificate. A student is eligible for the Bachelor's degree in any of the two areas upon satisfactory completion of a prescribed General Education Program of the College and the specific requirements of the Humanities Division. A total of 127 hours is required for a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. DIVISION OF HUMANITIES To develop effective communication skills To heighten creative and artistic sensibilities. To develop an awareness that heightens sensitivity to the human condition. To develop the ability to think critically and independently in academic and non-academic situations. To help students examine and clarify moral and ethical values. To develop in liberal arts students the knowledge and attitudes necessary to participate productively in careers of their choice. To develop an understanding of the African-American experience in relation to the larger American experience. DIVISIONAL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES A student must earn 40 semester hours in upper-level English courses for a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.
