Graduate study is offered in the Department of Foreign Languages leading to the degree of Master of Arts. Areas of study are French, German, and Spanish. Admission Criteria? The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required for admission to the M.S. program in Foreign Languages. International students are required to have a TOEFL score of 525 or better in order to be considered. Program of Study/Completion Requirements? Thesis and non-thesis options are available. The thesis option requires satisfactory completion of 24 semester hours of course work and six semester hours of research/thesis, for a total of 30 semester hours. The non-thesis option requires satisfactory completion of 33 semester hours in one language or 36 semester hours in two languages for students wishing a double major (18 semester hours in each language). Also required for the degree is a comprehensive oral examination based upon all course work taken and (where applicable) an oral defense of the thesis. One course, FL 8103 (Bibliography and Research Methods), is required of all Master's candidates. A minimum of 21 semester hours in one language must be taken for the M.A.; this allows a student to work in a minor field, such as History, Education, the Teaching of English as a Second Language, and Foreign Language Methodology.
