Criminal Justice Corrections from Missouri Western State University is a Campus Bachelor Criminal Justice degree that prepares you for a Legal career. Correctional officers are responsible for overseeing individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial or who have been convicted of a crime and sentenced to serve time in a jail, reformatory, or penitentiary. Correctional officers maintain security and inmate accountability to prevent disturbances, assaults, and escapes. Officers have no law enforcement responsibilities outside the institution where they work. MWSU Criminal Justice and Legal Studies Department The Department's mission is to provide a high quality education which includes the knowledge, skills, critical thinking, and applied learning that will prepare students to succeed in professional careers in criminal justice and legal studies or pursue graduate education in their chosen field. State-of-the-art facilities and labs also provide practical experience. In recent years, the department has offered several hands-on interactive courses through the Southern Institute of Forensic Science such as Blood Spatter Pattern Analysis and Human Skeletal Remains. Every professor in the department has experience in the criminal justice field, and Legal Studies professors are all licensed attorneys. The Legal Studies program is approved by the American Bar Association. MWSU has the only ABA approved program at a public institution in Missouri. The Legal Assistant program is also a charter member of the American Association for Paralegal Education. Career Opportunities Criminal Justice majors pursue careers in law enforcement, corrections , juvenile delinquency and criminal justice administration. Criminal Justice graduates are employed as law enforcement officers; probation officers; corrections officers; US Secret Service agents; US Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms investigators; security officers; substance abuse treatment center workers and juvenile court officers.
