The Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Early Childhood is the first Morrisville State College degree to be offered exclusively at the Norwich Campus. The degree is designed to address the needs of area students interested in pursuing careers as Early Childhood professionals. At the same time, the program is intended to respond to the identified needs of area childcare and child/family development organizations that must meet increasingly rigorous community and regulatory expectations for well-educated professionals to provide quality programs and services. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects continued strong employment opportunities for Early Childhood professionals for the foreseeable future. The curriculum provides those individuals seeking to pursue a career in this field with the knowledge, skills and experience required for success. This program is designed to effectively prepare students to enter careers that do not require teacher licensure or certification. The New York State Department of Education and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) strongly support increased training and education for early childhood professionals. Research suggests a significant relationship between providers? education and training and the quality of early education and care young children receive. As a result of the federal ?No Child Left Behind? legislation, access to professional education is also becoming increasingly critical for many childhood professionals already employed in the field. This degree will expand both educational and career opportunities for individuals within Chenango County and neighboring counties. Due to societal changes, the majority of children under the age of five are now being cared for either part ? or full-time by others. The necessity for high standards and quality in the education of young children is undisputed, and the need for an Associate Degree for entry into the field is growing. The degree meets all of the standards set forth by the National Association of the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). NAEYC soon expects to offer accreditation to associate programs in Early Childhood that meet established standards. Morrisville State College?s program has been developed to meet all of the criteria for accreditation. This program offers degree candidates the opportunity for in-depth study of coursework that integrates diversity, anti-bias education , inclusion and family collaboration and will challenge students through required coursework that addresses historical, practical and current professional issues in Early Childhood .
