The Bachelor of Science program in Game Art and Animation prepares students to translate creative concepts into objects, characters, and motion. Students take a core series of classes which allows them to build the visual, conceptual, and technical skills necessary to create and animate visual assets for three dimensional video games. Attention is given to the various sub-specialties within Game Art and Animation, including modeling, character animation, texturing, special effects , and technical art. By the Senior Year, students will begin to focus on one or two of these areas, which will serve as the emphasis for their capstone project. Career and Graduate Study Options Students with a degree in Game Art and Animation will be prepared for work as artists and animators at video game developers. Specialists are sought for areas including 3D modeling, character animation, texturing, visual effects, and technical art. Students may also decide to continue on to graduate study, as there are many schools that offer an MFA in Game Development and Interactive Media. Learning Objectives In addition to the All College Curriculum skills and perspective, students who successfully complete this program will: Be versed in the history and theory of games as they relate to play, static media, film, and culture; Be able to observe natural motion and reproduce or enhance it in their animation; Be familiar with and able to demonstrate the fundamentals of traditional animated motion techniques; Integrate Art Foundation concepts - including drawing, composition, and color - into their game art; Understand how to create and manipulate geometry within 3D Cartesian space; Be able to use image-editing software to create 2D textures and post-process rendered images; Learn to utilize game engine; Be able to organize and manage the large number of files required for game art creation; Create compelling stories and characters; Understand copyright issues as they relate to games; Learn to use a game engine to create interactivity; Gain exposure to the various subspecialties of game art and animatoiin, including digital sculpting, special effects , charact animation, texturing, and rigging; Be able to produce a complete model or animation, from conception to final rendering; Produce a portfolio, an edited video or website compliation of game art and/or animation.
