Mission Statement The Child Development and Education Department provides an exemplary program that supports the personal and professional development of lifelong learners. Learning opportunities occur in a research-based, inclusive, and responsive environment that integrates a variety of programs and services. The program prepares students to enter the workforce, obtain a formal degree, transfer to a four-year institution, and to advocate for children and families in a rapidly changing and highly diverse society. Program Description The Child Development and Education major includes required courses in child development and electives. As students participate in this program, they will: (1) learn about the physical, socio-emotional, cognitive and psychomotor growth and development of children from conception through adolescence; (2) prepare for successful parenting; (3) prepare to meet Title XXII and Title V state licensing requirements; (4) prepare to apply for Child Development Permits (issued by the State Commission on Teacher Credentialing); (5) acquire a foundation for transfer to four year institutions including preparation for a teaching credential; and (6) prepare to work with children in a variety of community settings. The Child Development and Education Program provides an educational and practical foundation for students interested in working with children from infancy through adolescence. In addition to theoretical principles, the curriculum offers practical skills and on-site training that will prepare students for employment in the field of Education. The program leads to a certificate in Child Development. The program also fulfills the required child development course work for the state issued Child Development Permit.
