The philosophy of the Associate Science Degree , Registered Nursing Program focuses on the individual needs of learners and clients (persons), within the context of families, communities and environments who exist on a health-illness continuum. Learning occurs via a dynamic and synergistic process that prepares the learner to function effectively as an entry-level registered nurse , a provider of care across the health/illness continuum as a member within the profession. The Associate of Science degree in Nursing faculty view the client as an integrated bio-psychosocial, sexual and cultural being, moving through the developmental states of the life cycle, in constant interaction with a changing environment. The discipline of nursing plays an integral role in health care delivery. Nursing practice is based upon the knowledge of natural and behavioral sciences in addition to accepted standards, ethics and legal mandates relating to nursing. The nursing process is used as a framework for providing independent or dependent interventions to persons from diverse groups with different needs. Nursing encourages personal, family and community participation in attaining and maintaining an optimal health state throughout the life span or to experience death with dignity. The Registered Nursing (RN) Program (Associate of Science degree in Nursing) prepares men and women to give direct nursing care to clients in various practice settings. The program consists of course work in nursing, science, general education and clinical nursing practice at local hospitals and health agencies. The Registered Nursing program is accredited by the California State Board of Registered Nursing. The Associate of Science degree in Nursing is a 78-unit degree program which requires four semesters (40 units in nursing) of study beyond completion of the prerequisite courses unless challenging for advanced placement. Upon completion of additional degree requirements, the graduate earns an Associate of Science degree in Nursing and is eligible to take the NCLEX-RN examination for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California. In addition to the Associate of Science degree in Nursing, Mt. San Jacinto College offers LVN to RN articulation options for completion of the RN Program.
