Through the 36-credit Religious Studies major, students explore religion in a variety of ways, with an emphasis upon the expression of historical traditions in contemporary life. Special emphasis is placed upon the role of contemplative practice in the world\\\'s great religions, especially Buddhism. All students must take a series of 18 credits that introduce the study of religion , Buddhist meditation practice and an introductory study of three different religious traditions. The additional 18 credits may be selected from core areas of study: contemporary issues in religion, contemplative practice, Buddhism or study abroad. The BA in Religious Studies is an interdisciplinary degree , providing graduates with the knowledge base and intellectual, communication, and interpersonal skills essential to success in any career. It provides preparation for graduate education in law, business and the helping professions as well as in any area of the social sciences or humanities where in-depth knowledge of religion will be a distinct advantage in one\\\'s career. More specifically, knowledge of religion?and the ability to think clearly and communicate effectively about it?is valuable in fields that involve public affairs, international and cross-cultural relations, religious issues and groups, or interaction with diverse individuals and populations. While it provides insights into the role of religion in personal, group, and societal identity and conflict, studying religion does not require any particular religious back ground or commitment.
