Nursing Program Mission Statement The New England Institute of Technology Nursing program seeks to prepare a competent entry level nurse to practice holistic nursing care in an increasingly complex and continually changing health care system. The Nursing program provides courses that are responsive to the needs of a diverse society as well as the nursing community. The high-quality education will enable students to reach career and life goals through knowledge and skills training. The central mission of the program is the preparation of individuals for effective, responsible, and articulate membership in the nursing profession. Through a combination of classroom, laboratory and clinical education experiences, the program emphasizes hands-on application of knowledge to the provision of nursing to all individuals. Nursing Program Goals The goals of the Nursing program are to: 1. Provide an educational program that is responsive to the current projected workforce needs of our constituents. 2. Prepare graduates who can practice effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team in a highly technical and complex healthcare delivery system. 3. Provide a solid foundation of knowledge that incorporates the development of knowledge, skills, and personal and professional values. 4. Establish and cultivate model sites for interdisciplinary practice and teaching. 5. Provide leadership in initiatives that address the nursing shortage, models of advanced nursing practice and health policy related to nursing. Nursing Program Philosophy The Nursing philosophy represents the core beliefs regarding human beings, environment, health, nursing, education and the role of the associate degree nurse. Our philosophy is the foundation of our curriculum that is designed to prepare nurses who will be able to meet the challenge facing healthcare practitioners today. We believe that every person is a unique being worthy of respect and dignity. In our nursing framework, biological and social components integrate seamlessly in individuals who use self-care to maintain their health status. We also believe that the environment ? which is viewed as the totality of the patient?s experience which includes the family, institutions, society, culture and the global community ? has a dramatic influence on health status. Health is characterized by wholeness in physical and mental functioning where physical, psychological, interpersonal, and social aspects of health are inseparable in the person. An individual?s response to stressors may change the ability for the patient to engage in self-care, resulting in deficits in meeting basic needs and requiring the need for nursing care. Individuals are moving toward maturation and achievement of their full potential. Humans have universal self-care requisites and nurses need to be tireless advocates for patient?s pursuit of these universal needs. Professional nursing is a science and an art. The science of nursing requires that nurses study and explore nursing and related knowledge areas. The art of nursing requires that nurses use knowledge gained from the humanities and sciences as the foundation for acceptance and application of patient?s values. Nursing care requires sensitivity as well as critical, logical, and analytical thinking to effect changes in patients and the health care system. Education for professional nursing practice includes a sound knowledge base to support experiential learning. The educational process facilitates continuing and professional growth. The intent of the educational program is to focus on the learner with active participation of the student in the learning process. Education is a life-long process with the commitment of the learner to establish patterns of continued inquiry. Nursing Program Objectives and Outcomes The graduate nurse of the NEIT Associate in Science Degree in Nursing program will demonstrate the following abilities: 1. To use the nursing process to manage and provide care to individuals across the lifespan through efficient and effective management of resources in a variety of health care settings. Prioritize care for individuals and groups of patients. Coordinate care delivered by members of the health care team along the continuum of care. Develop individualized plans of care for patients in a variety of settings and ensure implementation. Demonstrate competence in the delivery of cost effective nursing care using current technologies. 2. To communicate effectively with patients, their support systems, and the health care team through the use of interpersonal skills and technology. Utilize therapeutic communication skills with patients and their support systems to deliver nursing care and achieve positive patient outcomes. Communicate effectively in oral, written and electronic formats. 3. To perform ongoing comprehensive assessments of patients\\\' health status and changing needs. Perform comprehensive ongoing assessments using multiple sources of data to plan and deliver nursing care. Identify resources and influential factors impacting the health care needs of the patients on an ongoing basis. Assess the educational needs of the patient, support system and their community. 4. To employ clinical decision making based on critical thinking skills and evidence-based practices to deliver safe effective nursing care through the nursing process. Make appropriate clinical judgments and decisions to plan outcome-based care based on the nursing process. Demonstrate an ability to analyze and integrate knowledge, assessment data, and evidenced-based information to make clinical decisions. Participate in the research and performance improvement process, through problem identification and data collection to positively affect patient outcomes. 5. To demonstrate caring interventions based on physiological and psychosocial needs of the patient. Deliver individualized nursing care that reflects the patient\\\'s age, culture, values, beliefs, and lifestyle. Provide competent nursing care within the legal and ethical framework of nursing practice. Provide an environment for the patient and their support system that promotes safety, comfort, trust, and achievement of optimal health. Exhibit a nurturing, caring, compassionate attitude toward patients and their support system. 6. To collaborate with patients, support persons, members of the health care team and community agencies to provide patient-centered quality care. Facilitate communication and cooperation among patient, support persons, peers, community agencies, and members of the health care team. Participate in planning, decision-making, problem solving and goal setting as a patient advocate. Plan and provide outcome focused care based on input and information from the patient, support person(s), and health care team. 7. To initiate the teaching-learning processes to promote, maintain, and restore health to individuals within their community. Identify teaching-learning needs for individuals and groups to promote, and maintain health. Provide formal and informal health education in various setting to achieve desired learning outcomes. Deliver education through collaboration with the patient, support person(s), peers, and health care team. Apply the nursing process to meet the teaching-learning needs of individuals within their community. 8. To demonstrate professional accountability and commitment to standards of professional practice while practicing nursing within legal, ethical and regulatory frameworks. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for care provided by self or delegated to others. Serve as a patient advocate. Identify forces that are influential on the health care delivery system (i.e. economic, political, social, and demographic). Recognize professional role responsibilities.
