English from New Jersey City University is a Campus Bachelor English degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. The English Department is an active, vibrant department committed to the success of its students. Members of the English Department faculty are actively involved in research, and the creative work of the faculty includes poetry, prose fiction, essays, and journalism. Each year the English Department publishes Paths, a student journal of creative writing. The Poetry Club publishes a collection of prose and poetry which may include work written by high school students from Hudson County. In addition, students have the opportunity to publish their expository work in Explorations: A Journey in Expository Writing. The English Department also sponsors an annual lecture series which brings well-known writers to the campus. Every spring the department celebrates Shakespeare with its \\\"New Jersey Shakespeare Scene Festival,\\\" (based on the Folger Shakespeare model that has been in existence for more than 25 years). The department also sponsors a chapter of the International English Honors Society, Sigma Tau Delta. Students who enjoy reading and writing about literature and/or writing creatively are excellent candidates for the English Major. The English Department offers a rich variety of courses from which are shaped five concentrations: Creative Writing, Journalism, Literature, the Combined Track, and Theater Arts. Students who plan to teach in high school concentrate on the Combined Track. Students interested in elementary or early childhood education can pursue any track except Theater Arts. Students interested in Theater Arts divide their studies between the Music, Dance, and Theater Department and the English Department. The requirement for admission to all concentrations is a grade point average of 2.0 in General Studies courses. Only courses in which a grade of \\\"C\\\" or better is earned apply to the major. Students are assigned an English faculty advisor as soon as they declare their major and are encouraged to declare their major as early as possible in their academic careers. Note: Beginning Spring 2004, English majors in all concentrations, except theater, will be required to take ENGL 213 Introduction to the Study of Literature before completing nine credits in the major. Adjustments to the various concentrations will be made to accommodate the new course without increasing the number of credits required for the major. The English Department administers a major examination to all its graduating seniors as part of the Department\\\'s ongoing assessment plan. View more details on New Jersey City University .
