Philosophy and Purpose of the Associate Degree Nursing Program Philosophy and Purpose of the Associate Degree Nursing Program The philosophy of the Associate Degree Nursing Program of North Arkansas College is in accord with the philosophy and purpose of the college. The nursing faculty believes education is a growth process by which behavioral changes take place in individuals as the result of experiences that they have undergone. Optimum learning occurs when the environment places responsibilities of learning on the individual, provides freedom for inquiry, considers individual differences, and provides correlation between theory and practice. Nursing education applies theories from nursing, general education, and scientific fields. Nursing education provides learning experiences that enable students to develop competencies necessary for the practice of nursing. Within this process, the student acquires knowledge and develops self-discipline, critical thinking skills, and the ability to make decisions within a different relationship with other health care workers. The purpose of the curriculum is to provide learning experiences that enable the student to develop as an associate degree nurse, as an individual, and as a citizen. The curriculum includes foundations in the psychological, biological and social sciences, and in the knowledge and skills necessary for patient care.
