Cabinet and Furniture Making from North Bennet Street School is a Campus Certificate Cabinetmaking and Millwork Millwright degree that prepares you for a Engineering career. Recognized as one of the premier woodworking schools in the country, North Bennet Street School teaches the time-honored skills, ideas, and values of fine craftsmanship through rigorous hands-on training in Cabinet and Furniture Making. Our two-year, traditional Cabinet and Furniture Making program attracts students who share a passion for materials, the creative and problem-solving processes, and the intelligence of their hands to build, repair, or reproduce custom pieces and structures that will last for generations to come. Curriculum Custom furniture makers are called upon to make a wide variety of furnishings. Their work requires a thorough knowledge of furniture construction, including proficiency in the use of hand tools and power equipment and an understanding of the logic of procedures used. In this program, students will learn how to: Demonstrate proficiency in the use and maintenance of hand tools. Operate stationary power equipment effectively and safely. Layout and cut various types of woodworking joints by hand and machine. Utilize furniture ornamentation techniques such as turning, carving, moldings and veneering, especially as used in traditional American and English furniture. Layout and install furniture hardware. Sand, stain, fill, finish and polish furniture pieces. Service and maintain all power equipment encountered in a small woodworking shop. Prepare full size working drawings for each project. Estimate costs and select materials. At the beginning of the program, students will complete a series of exercises and projects, including drafting assignments, benchwork, and fundamental hand skills in the use of planes, chisels, and turning as well as basic machine operations. For the first major project, each student constructs a tool chest based on a drawing approved by an instructor and within certain design constraints. Additionally, students are expected to design and construct at least one example of a table, a chair, and another piece of case work. These pieces typically represent traditional 18th and 19th century furniture designs because they require the hand skills and woodworking techniques that are the foundations of the NBSS curriculum. Students are encouraged to challenge themselves to learn new techniques and skills in each of the projects they select and execute. Employment Cabinet and Furniture Making program graduates work as employees or for themselves in fields such as custom furniture making, architectural millwork , teaching, furniture repair, and restoration.
