Program Description Graduates of this Associate of Applied Science degree program will be qualified and skilled as entry level Firefighter/Paramedics. This program provides an opportunity for students to obtain basic and advanced instruction in fire fighting, rescue, hazardous materials incident response and paramedic knowledge, skills and techniques. The Firefighter/Paramedic is a person who works in the exciting, expanding field(s) of Fire Protection Services and Emergency Medical Services (EMS). The program consists of general education and technical coursework, including classroom as well as technical hands-on training to enable the student to become familiar with all aspects of an entry level Firefighter/Paramedic. The specialization and advanced education and training in the care and transport of the critically ill and injured can mean the difference between life and death. A.A.S. degree graduates have enhanced potential for upward progression in the career of a Firefighter/Paramedic. Employment Opportunities Career opportunities for Firefighter/Paramedic include public and private fire protection services that offer Advanced Level Support (ALS) medical response. Nationwide demand exists for students wanting to become professional Firefighter/Paramedic. Typically job titles will be as a starting Firefighter/Paramedic with a municipal fire department, but in some cases industry or other governmental institutions will hire graduates with these capabilities. This degree program prepares students for the National Registry of EMT?s Paramedic Exam as well as Minnesota Fire Fighter I & II certification exams. Program Learner Outcomes 1. Student will complete all assigned tasks and duties in a manner consistent with the roles and responsibilities of a Firefighter/Paramedic within a Fire/EMS system. 2. Student will demonstrate professional behaviors, characteristics and attitudes expected by employers and the a Fire/EMS system. 3. Student will complete all assigned tasks and duties within the expected legal and ethical parameters of a professional firefighter/paramedic. 4. Student will demonstrate entry-level competencies of assessment and management of diverse patients. 5. Student will apply the basic concepts of development, pathophysiology, and pharmacology to assess and manage diverse patients. 6. Student will safely manage the scene of an emergency, demonstrating behaviors conducive to effective teamwork. 7. Student will communicate effectively with all healthcare providers, other professionals and patients with respect for diversity of culture, age and gender. 8. Student will perform professional firefighting skills as outlined in the National Fire Protection Association standards. 9. Student will demonstrate effective, professional internal and external (written and oral) communication skills required of the Fire/EMS industry. 10.
