Program Format: Campus Program Level: Ph.D

Doctor's degree Slavic Languages and Literatures from Northwestern University is a Campus Ph.D Language degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. The Ph.D. program in Slavic languages and literatures at Northwestern ranks among the very best in the country. It combines a great deal of individual attention with reasonable flexibility in designing a course of study. All students specialize in Russian literature, although we have the capacity to offer interested students courses in Czech, Polish, South Slavic, and Ukrainian literature and culture. Our greatest strengths are in Russian prose and poetry, in literary theory, and in the social and intellectual context of literary works. Our full-time faculty consists of seven tenure and tenure-track professors and two full-time lecturers, and it is supplemented by visitors and affiliates. We believe strongly in crafting a course of studies for each student that makes the most of his or her special abilities. In particular, we give \\\"follow-up\\\" tutorials, in which students take a successful paper from a prior course and turn it into a publishable paper or a talk given at national conferences. As a result, the students acquire the skills necessary for creative thinking, original research, and professional exposition. We also encourage students to take advantage of the university\\\'s excellent resources in adjacent fields, such as film, philosophy, comparative literature, Russian history, and English.
