Slavic Language and Literatures from Northwestern University is a Campus Bachelor Language degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. Our undergraduate major program focuses on providing a solid grounding in the contemporary Russian language, and provides a well-designed series of courses that give the student a strong foundation in Russian and Slavic culture and literature. Through the language and literature, we get an intimate view of a great civilization whose political, religious, and cultural ideas are in many ways fascinatingly different from our own. The program is intellectually challenging and students with a broad variety of career interests find that it offers excellent preparation for their future professional goals. In recent years, as Russia has opened up, many of our best students have gone on to live and work in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The program of study for majors provides excellent training in the Russian language with an emphasis on practical usage as well as a solid foundation in Russian literature from its origins to the present day. Most majors take four years of Russian language courses or the equivalent, including a one-quarter stay in Moscow (see Study Abroad section).
