Students will be prepared to work as legal secretaries in law offices, legal departments of large commercial concerns and legal bureaus of the government. The curriculum covers such areas as speed writing/transcription, word processing with legal documents, internet research, legal terminology and law office procedures, as well as other skills. In addition to assisting in the preparation of court papers, legal documents (i.e. real estate, probate, civil or criminal litigation) and correspondence, students will use computers to maintain research materials, libraries, files and financial records. During the spring semester students are placed in law officers or legal work experience. PROGRAM OUTCOMES 1. Read, understand and prepare standard types of legal communications; 2. Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal skills, human relations skills; 3. Understand and use the legal terminology required in speed dictation of legal correspondence, preparing forms, documents, and transcribed material; 4. Employ appropriate legal office procedures; 5. Understand and perform office accounting tasks; 6. Possess appropriate skills in the following software applications: operating system, word processing. Spreadsheet, database management, integrated office applications, desktop publishing and presentation graphics and other software appropriate for the office environment; 7. Understand the importance of confidentiality in dealing with legal matters; 8. Demonstrate speed and accuracy in keyboarding skills; 9.
