Mission of the Department of Justice Studies and Sociology The mission of the Department of Justice Studies and Sociology is to develop and maintain within the framework of the University?s mission a high quality program of criminal justice that will be recognized as one of the finest undergraduate programs in the Northeast, while supporting and contributing to the welfare and reputation of the University. Specific goals are: to be at the forefront of developments in criminal justice by providing students with cutting-edge training in emerging areas of criminal justice; to provide career preparation for students expecting to work in the criminal justice field or related fields; contribute through professional activities to the continued development of the academic fields of criminal justice , criminology, and sociology; foster working relationships with local and state organizations, both public and private, and engage in community service and to establish national projection of our program and greater interaction of our students with criminal justice programs nationwide. In order to provide career preparation for students expecting to work in the criminal justice field or related fields, the program offers internships, career counseling, and pre-law advising, and incorporates into the curriculum case analyses, police and court observations, field trips, simulations, and guest-lectures by practitioners. Internships and work-study opportunities are also available at the Vermont Center for Justice Research (VCJR), which is currently administered by the Norwich criminal justice faculty. The VCJR, one of only seven state criminal justice statistical analysis centers affiliated with a university, is responsible for information dissemination, statistical analysis, and planning in criminal justice for the State of Vermont.
