PROGRAM OVERVIEW At ODU, Sociology majors focus on a comprehensive, macroscopic understanding of society and social issues. Areas of study include the social construction of reality, culture and socialization, stratification and social inequalities, and deviance and social controls, as these are embedded in the social institutions of family, politics, economics, education, health care and religion. KEY POINTS ABOUT THE ART MAJOR Sociology majors focus on a comprehensive, global understanding of society and social issues. Areas of study include social institutions such as the family, politics, economics, education and religion, as well as issues including the creation of culture; how we become members of a society; and how societies address differences. ODU graduates work in social agencies, businesses, schools and churches; while others continue their study at graduate school. CAREER POSSIBILITIES Some Sociology graduates work in social service agencies, businesses, schools, criminal justice and churches, while others continue their study in graduate school. Sociology graduates work with immigrants, women, homeless persons, domestic violence survivors, teens, persons in the criminal justice system, minorities and families.
