Music Education Program Objectives Graduates of the Music programs should possess the following knowledge and skills: Music program graduates should know the following: 1. The notation of pitch, tempo, dynamics, and musical terms as they apply to instruments and voice 2. The characteristics of tone production, breath support, posture, diction, and articulation as needed for the study of musical performance 3. The fundamentals of music theory and practice of the tonal musical periods and basic concepts of contemporary musical styles, including harmony, texture, voice leading, transposition, and modulation 4. The history of musical style and musical form from the middle ages to the contemporary period, including secular and sacred works for orchestra, chamber music , and vocal and choral music 5. The influence of the Christian church on the history and practice of music Music program graduates should be able to do the following: 1. To be able to identify and notate melodic and harmonic materials through aural skills 2. To demonstrate skills necessary for continued advancement and achievement as a vocal or orchestral performer 3. To be able to analyze musical style and performance in the context of a Christian worldview 4. To be able to use music software for musical composition and arrangement 5. To be able to lead Christian worship Music Education Major The Bachelor of Science in Music Education is a program leading to certification in general music (with a specialization in vocal music) for teaching in grades K-12. The curriculum meets the standards of the Oklahoma Commission on Teacher Preparation and the Oklahoma State Board of Education and is nationally accredited through NCATE.
