The Art History program offers a comprehensive overview of the history of art, with special emphasis on contemporary and world arts , as well as critical theory, visual culture, and diverse courses in traditional European and American art history. Students may participate in a study abroad program, and one student each year will receive the Sponenburgh Travel Award, allowing him or her to spend the summer studying in Europe. During the winter and spring terms of 2009, students will have access to courses in modern and contemporary, thirteenth century Italian, Native American, and multi-cultural arts , as well as methods and theory and the history of design. Art history faculty are readily available to advise students on research projects, and those students interested in pursuing art history graduate work will have the opportunity to write a senior thesis involving original research. The overall feel of the program is that of a small liberal arts college within the environment of a major research university, so students have frequent opportunities to get to know faculty and other art history majors and to actively participate in the Student Art History Association.
