The Department of Mathematics offers a broad choice of educational and career goals. Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), and Bachelor of Arts in Education (B.A.E.) degrees are available to the mathematics major. Minors are offered in mathematics, statistics and actuarial science. The mathematics faculty at PLU is committed to quality teaching and to providing a first-class education. Mathematics classes at PLU are kept small so that the faculty are able to know and interact with individual students. The Department of Mathematics actively encourages interaction among students, in the belief that a cooperative learning environment helps one achieve one\\\'s maximum potential. Each B.S. and B.A. major completes a year-long senior project on a mathematical topic of his or her choice. Students work closely with an individual faculty member on this project, which culminates in a public presentation and written report. All the reports are collected together and published within the mathematics department. Each year, teams of PLU students enter the Putnam Intercollegiate Mathematics Competition and the Mathematical Contest in Modeling. These competitions, in pure and applied mathematics, respectively, provide substantial intellectual challenge that many students have found exciting and beneficial. Many mathematics courses use computers and graphing calculators. Several classrooms are equipped for computer demonstrations. The Department of Mathematics has a modern computer classroom containing 17 Macintosh G4 computers for student assignments and projects. A current grant from the National Science Foundation, Adapting WeBWorK Internet-Based Gateway Exams and Maple PowerTools to Introduce Appropriate Use of Technology in the First Two Semesters of Calculus, puts the Department on the cutting edge of educational use of technology in mathematics . The Department view of the ?appropriate use of technology? affirms the fundamental role of traditional pencil and paper technology for doing mathematics and equally embraces the use of electronic tools for visualizing, exploring, and modeling. The university provides every student with an e-mail account and personal Web page. The Computer Center user room has IBM and Macintosh microcomputers available for your use. Each residence hall room directly accesses the campus-wide computer network and the Internet. The mathematics faculty annually award several scholarships as recognition of outstanding work in mathematics. Advanced students are also given honorary memberships in professional associations.
