Program Description: The curriculum focuses on children, from infancy through school age. Courses provide foundations and prepare students for careers in child care, sociology, social work, education, special education and psychology. Opportunities are available for work with children in a variety of settings including homes, schools, hospitals, and public and non-profit agencies concerned with the development and welfare of children. CPR, first-aid training, TB and fingerprint clearances are required for certificates in child development. Student Learning Outcomes Students will be assessed on their ability to 1. Students will demonstrate through original written and/or oral presentations their ability to identify the theories and practices of the social, emotional, creative, cognitive and physical development of young children. 2. Students will demonstrate an awareness of and evaluate important factors in planning in childcare facilities and the ethical issues involved in working with young children. 3. Students will demonstrate responsibility as self-directed learners and facilitators of the practical application of theoretical concepts through structured interaction in child care settings. 4. Students will demonstrate an understanding for the planning and guiding of learning activities. 5. Students will demonstrate competency upon completion of structured mentoring experiences in approved learning partnerships with private industry. 6.
