This two-year competency-based program leads to an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Welding Technology and provides skills and related technical knowledge necessary for advancement in the metals industry. Instruction includes classroom study as well as extensive practice in the welding lab. Peninsula College provides Washington Association of Building Officials (WABO) certification testing for students in an approved facility on the campus. The coordinator/instructor of the Welding Technology program is a certified welding educator and a certified welding inspector through the American Welding Society (AWS). Peninsula College is an approved WABO test facility. Persons interested in taking WABO examination(s) should contact the program coordinator for information. Additional separate welding courses for persons not seeking the Welding Technology degree are available through this program, as is a preparatory course for the welding certification examination. This program contains two courses which are articulated through the Tech Prep program with one or more area high schools. Career Opportunities Throughout Washington state there is an extremely high demand for welding technicians, with annual job openings for welders and cutters. The advisory committee for this program emphasizes that workers with good welding skills have always been able to get a living-wage welding job.
