The certificate can supplement the student?s prior education by providing a foundation of the understanding of later life. Students will learn: Physical, psychological and social changes that recur as a function of aging Pathological elements of aging Sustaining ability to complete ADL?s Planning for retirement and aging Changes in family situations (empty nest, death of a spouse) Nutritional needs and changes -vitamin and mineral needs -small meals, number of meals, etc. Maintaining cognitive and physical abilities Assisting family member in understanding aging process, illness and death The ?long goodbye? - dealing with Alzheimer?s and other dementia types The program enhances knowledge and skills of people for service roles in area agencies, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other institutions for the aged, public welfare and family service agencies, mental health facilities, as well as roles in business and industry dealing with older consumers and/or employees.
