The Master of Arts in Teaching-Special Education (MAT-SPED) program is designed to prepare individuals who desire licensure as a special education teacher in grades K-12 servicing students with mild disabilities who receive instruction in the North Carolina Standard Curriculum. The Master of Arts in Teaching-Special Education (MAT-SPED) is a 45 semester hour degree program of study that takes place in two phases. In phase one, candidates master the content and pedagogy necessary to provide research-based instruction and behavior supports that facilitate academic growth of students with mild disabilities who receive instruction in the North Carolina Standard Curriculum. At the end of phase one, candidates engage in a full-time (minimum of 10 weeks) internship in a local school district. Upon completion of phase one requirements, candidates will be eligible for initial licensure as a special education ? general curriculum teacher. After earning initial licensure, candidates enter phase two where they will engage in sequential coursework that allows for extension and expansion of content area expertise in the field of special education . With successful completion of the required 12 semester hours in phase two, candidates will be eligible for graduation with the Master of Arts in Teaching-Special Education degree and recommended for advance (M) level licensure.
