The Polk State College Department of Nursing was established in 1965 through a grant from the Kellogg Foundation. The purpose of the Nursing program is to participate as an active partner in meeting the healthcare needs of the community by educating and preparing entry-level professional nurses to practice in a variety of settings. Polk State College faculty members are committed to providing professional development for each student, supporting the institution within the community, and enhancing the nursing profession. The program is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing. The Polk State College Nursing program received initial accreditation by the National League for Nursing in 1967. Polk State College Nursing graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensing Examination-RN to become registered nurses . The program continues to maintain high standards for nursing practice. Polk State College graduates have consistently scored higher than the national and state averages on the NCLEX-RN licensing examination. Many graduates eventually pursue advanced nursing degrees at the baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral levels. Both campuses have a Nursing Laboratory with state-of-the-art instructional technology offered through computerized simulator mannequins, along with simulated hospital settings and equipment that provide a realistic learning environment in which students practice clinical skills along with nursing faculty and support staff. A full-time Nursing Lab Specialist, several part-time assistants (registered nurses), and student tutors staff the lab. Both campuses also have Nursing Multi-Media Centers, which are independent study labs used by students in all levels of nursing courses. These centers contain nursing educational software, audiovisual equipment, videos, and networked computers with Internet access and printers that students can use to enhance their learning. We are proud of our Polk State College chapter of the Florida Nursing Student Association (FNSA), which has received numerous awards and recognition at both the state and national levels over the past 20 years. Our Polk State College FNSA chapter won the prestigious title of \\\"Chapter of the Year\\\" three times in the past few years! FNSA focuses on promoting leadership development, mentoring, community outreach, and enhancing professional education among our future nurses. Students are eligible to join after completing 9 hours of prerequisite courses. The approximate cost of the program is $12,000. This includes tuition (for all general education and nursing courses), required books/materials, uniforms and equipment, a physical exam, required immunizations and background checks, and other program-related expenses. Students are encouraged to apply for financial aid upon application/admission to the College. A beginning registered nurse working full time can expect to earn at least $45,000 annually, plus benefits. Salaries can be higher depending upon the shift and work setting. Healthcare is the largest service industry in Polk County. Approximately 60% of the registered nurses in Polk County are graduates from the Polk State College Nursing program. Polk State College Nursing graduates are employed in a variety of healthcare settings and specialty areas.
