Also covers personal hygiene, good grooming and visual poise. Anatomy and Physiology: deals with cells and human anatomy as related to cosmetology. Also covers the nature of electricity and the safety precautions used in the salon. Shop Department/Salesmanship/Management: covers principals and practices of proper salon management, professional ethics and customer relations. Local, state, and federal tax laws covering salon ownership and operations are covered. Chemical ................................................ 600 hours Hair Structure and Chemistry: covers the composition of hair, its structures, growth and disorders, basic scalp care and disorders. Permanent Waves: teaches the chemistry of permanent waving, the relationship between hair structure, proper perming procedures and safety procedures to follow. Hair Relaxers: chemical relaxing teaches the purpose of relaxing the hair, the chemistry of different relaxer products, and steps for relaxing and safety precautions for client and operator. Hair Coloring/Bleaching/Toning: teaches the principals of color theory and its relationship to hair coloring, classifications of hair color, preparation of hair colors, the activity of hydrogen peroxide, corrective hair coloring procedures, correct application of hair color and safety precautions. Physical.................................................600 hours Hair Styling: defines hairstyling and the basic elements of hairstyling, including proper use and care of implements in hairstyling, characteristics of hair client consultation prior to hair styling. It also includes thermal hairstyling and curling, safety measures and proper techniques and implements used in thermal pressing, products required, analyzing, procedures and safety precautions for client and operator. Shampoo and Rinses: teaches proper draping for wet/dry chemical services and proper shampooing and rinsing techniques. Hair Shaping: teaches basis in hair cutting using shears, razor and clippers. Facials: the study of the skin structure, disorder and diseases. Includes facial massage, facials and application of makeup. After graduating from a cosmetology program, students take a state licensing examination. With a cosmetologist license, they can work as hairstylists in hair salons. They can become hair salon owners or managers. They can also be platform artists at hair shows or do demonstration/workshop at beauty schools or salons.
